What happens when my real estate license comes up for state renewal?

In addition to your General Referral membership renewal, referral agents also have state license renewals. All New Jersey real estate agents are required to complete the renewal process every two years, before June 30th of odd numbered years. For example, on 6/30/2023.

NJ License Renewal Steps

• Log-in to the NJ Real Estate Commission portal (as shown in the video above).
• Complete & submit the online qualifying questionnaire.
• Pay the $100 state license renewal fee (charged to you by General Referral & paid to the state on your behalf).
• Complete CE credits. (waived by the state for all NJ referral agents)

Timeline

• By April 1st. You should have an email from the NJ Real Estate Commission with instructions on completing your qualifying questionnaire. For a more detailed looked at the qualifying questionnaire, see our in-depth article.
• On April 1st. You should have an email from General Referral with details on your license renewal.
• On June 1st. The General Referral deadline for completed qualifying questionnaires.
• 1st week of June. General Referral charges the state license renewal fee to the payment method you have on file (subject to exceptions in the next section).

N.B. General Referral agents who have not completed their qualifying questionnaire & paid their license renewal fee by June 5th are subject to a $40 late fee.

When You Can Expect to Pay You NJ License Renewal Fee (based on when you join GR)

• GR agents that join or have a GR membership anniversary between April and June of an odd numbered year. The $100 state renewal fee is charged when your GR membership is charged. You will receive an email notice in advance of the charge if you are renewing. GR then pays the state renewal fee on your behalf.
• GR agents that do not fall into this timeframe. The payment method you have on file will be charged $100 during the first week of June. GR then pays the state your renewal fee on your behalf.
